Filing a Patent at Your Local Patent Office
Patents are highly significant for inventors and creative people in order to protect their ideas. A patent is useful in giving you the right to exclude others from making, using or selling a product, device or process for a defined length of time. The use of a patent prevents others from copying your ideas.
An important step in order to file a patent is to contact the Patent and Trademark Office for the United States, or your local patents office in your country. They will usually have a website, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office even has a database of all current patents online. The most common type of patent is the utility patent, which lasts for at least 17 years.
